Citizenship Ceremonies

New citizens at Australia Day event

Council conducts Citizenship Ceremonies on behalf of the Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs.

Citizenship Ceremonies are conducted by the Mayor. Family and friends are welcome to attend to observe this memorable occasion.

“Online citizenship ceremonies were introduced in March 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Following the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, face-to-face citizenship ceremonies have resumed with most local government councils across the country. These ceremonies should comply with current state or territory directives on the limits on gatherings, and meet COVID Safe requirements.”

How to apply

Information about how to become an Australian Citizen is available from the Australian Government or telephone 13 1880. The nearest immigration office is located at 2 Lonsdale Street Melbourne.

Once your application is approved by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection, they will contact Council and we will invite you to attend a Citizenship Ceremony where your Australian Citizenship will be conferred.
