There is still time for you to nominate a person or event for the 2021 Mount Alexander Shire Australia Day Awards.

These annual awards are a fantastic way to celebrate acts of kindness, generosity and community spirit that we are lucky enough to have in spades throughout our shire.

Vic Say is the 2020 Senior Citizen of the Year for his many years of support and work with Aboriginal and refugee groups in the community. Vic said it was an honour to receive the award and is encouraging people to put in their nomination forms.

“Receiving this award was a very positive affirmation from the community for the things I do quietly to help strengthen communities who don’t have a ready-made platform,” said Vic.

“It was a gentle way of acknowledging the things I have done over the years and it was wonderful to be able to share it with my family and friends from Dja Dja Wurrung, and the Malay and South Sudanese communities,” he said.

Vic has worked with the local Aboriginal community for well over 20 years and early on helped to raise awareness of the Indigenous history and culture of the area.

"The local Aboriginal community is an increasingly important, creative and vital part of our shared community with a range of the amazing projects building a dynamic framework for future action and mentoring,” he said.

Over the years Vic has found respectful and creative ways to work with organisations and agencies to advocate for a range of people, including newly arrived refugees from South Sudan and Malaysian newcomers with work visas. He has also assisted with lessons in driving, English and computer skills.

“A lot of people may not understand the gaps in knowledge of adapting to a new country and culture. I try to help people adapt to the way of life in Australia and fit into the community in a positive way,” said Vic.

“When you put in energy for what strengthens the community the rewards are greater than you could ever imagine,” he said.

There are so many people doing wonderful things for our community and Vic is encouraging you to nominate them for the 2021 Mount Alexander Shire Australia Day Awards.

“The effort of filling out a nomination form is very small compared to the contribution that many people make for our community – whether that is as part of a club or invisibly changing the culture that we share,” said Vic.

“There are many people who put in so much effort. All you need to do is fill out a nomination form so they can be considered for these awards. The small amount of time is well worthwhile.

“Go to Council’s website or drop into the Civic Centre and ask for guidance,” he said.

Categories are Citizen of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Event of the Year (includes online events).

Nominations are due by 5.00pm on Friday 4 December. Complete an online nomination form at www.mountalexander.vic.gov.au/AustraliaDay or collect a copy from the Civic Centre in Castlemaine.
