Outdoor swimming pools in Castlemaine, Harcourt, Maldon and Newstead will open on the first Saturday in December.

Thursday 3 December 2020

Outdoor swimming pools in Castlemaine, Harcourt, Maldon and Newstead open this weekend, so get ready to cool down and make a splash.

The pool season kicks off on Saturday 5 December and continues throughout summer until the end of the Labour Day long weekend in March 2021.

“Spending a day at the pool is a great way to get active, have some fun and cool off,” said Cath Olive, Manager Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities, Mount Alexander Shire Council.

“There will be COVIDSafe practices in place at each pool, along with our usual safety procedures,” said Ms Olive.

There are plenty of activities to choose from and pool managers YMCA Victoria has worked with Council and the pool committees to come up with fun programs across a range of age groups.

Opportunities include aqua aerobics, junior lifeguard program and aqua playgroup. Girls Make Your Move will also return, which will provide young women aged 12 to 18 limited free entry to the pools during February.

There will also be wellness programs and activities of offer, including body wellness indexing and free access to the YMCA’s Virtual Y online health and wellbeing resource website.

Each pool offers VicSwim swimming lessons which are now open for bookings and lap swimming. Bookings can also be made for lane hire and birthday parties.

Under current COVID-19 requirements, patrons outdoors who can socially distance are not required to wear a mask. However, a mask must be carried and worn when indoors, including the change rooms.

To assist with contract tracing, patrons will be provided with a unique QR code that can be used throughout the 2020/2021 pool season. Registration may also be undertaken online or in-person. The maximum capacity limit at each facility is 300 people.

At this time public access equipment and toys will not be available unless in a programmed class where appropriate sanitisation of equipment will take place.

Qualified lifeguards work at each pool to provide safe supervision. To ensure further safety Council follows the Victorian Government’s Watch Around Water requirements. The requirements are compulsory for public pools and govern the number of children that adults are able to supervise. One adult can supervise two children under five or four children aged five to nine years.

Feedback from the community has guided healthy food choices in the kiosk, with ‘green’ (best choice) and ‘amber’ (choose carefully) rated foods available.

The weather policy means that pools will not open if the forecast temperature for the day is lower than 23ºC. This is based on the temperature forecast for Castlemaine on the Bureau of Meteorology website at 6.00pm the previous day.

Pools will not open on declared Code Red Days and on Christmas Day. Patrons can enjoy free entry on Australia Day at all four pools.

Council also provides funding each year to support the Chewton Pool, run for the community, by the community.
