21 June 2022

Tree works will soon start in Castlemaine, Newstead, Campbells Creek and Maldon to improve public safety and the appearance of treed areas throughout Mount Alexander Shire.

The works will occur on street trees, in and around several parks and reserves, and are part of Mount Alexander Shire Council’s annual tree management program.

Priority areas to be pruned include:

• Elizabeth Street, Castlemaine
• Maldon Road, Castlemaine
• Pyrenees Highway, Newstead
• Main Road, Campbells Creek

Parks and council properties identified for works include:

• Castlemaine Botanical Gardens
• Morrissey Reserve
• Newstead Swimming Pool
• Lyons Park
• Victory Park and Market Building car park
• Maldon Public Gardens
• Maldon Swimming Pool

The works will remove dead wood from trees, reduce and remove hazardous branches and maintain appropriate clearances from roads, footpaths, street lights and signs.

The trees identified for maintenance are based on a proactive assessment by Council’s Tree Management Officer to maintain tree amenity, health and safety.

All tree works will be carried out by qualified arborists in line with Australian Standards.

Every effort will be made to retain tree shape and character. Trees on private property will not be pruned.

The tree maintenance program will start in July and is expected to be completed by November.
The program will have minimal disruption to the community, however there may be some changed traffic management plans in place while works are underway.
