Truck at standpipe

Drinking water may be obtained from standpipes operated in Mount Alexander Shire. Council operates standpipes in Newstead, Taradale and Maldon.

Individuals must have a water carter permit issued by Coliban Water to access water from standpipes.

Maldon standpipe: upgrade and temporary closure

The Maldon standpipe is being upgraded and will be closed from Monday 20 August to Friday 24 August 2018. Water will not be available during this period. Notice: Maldon standpipe upgrade

Also, from Saturday 25 August customers must have an electronic Avdata key to access water from the Maldon standpipe, tokens will no longer be used. The hours of operation will also change.

The Maldon standpipe is being upgraded to the Avdata System in line with the Newstead and Taradale standpipes. During the closure period customers are advised to use the Newstead and Taradale standpipes.

An electronic Avdata key can be purchased at the Mount Alexander Shire Council Civic Centre in Castlemaine. To obtain an electronic key you need to complete an application form, present your water carters and drivers licences and pay a one-off fee of $34. The key will enable you to access water from each of the three standpipes in our shire.

Customers with an existing electronic Avdata key (with access to the Newstead and Taradale standpipes) will automatically have access to the Maldon standpipe following the upgrade.

How to apply for an electronic key and Avdata account


The standpipes in Newstead and Taradale have a computerised system operated by an Avdata electronic key. The Maldon standpipe will be upgraded to the Avdata electronic key system effective from 25 August 2018. Individuals with a water carter permit can apply for an electronic key and Avdata account.

To receive an electronic key visit the Mount Alexander Shire Council Civic Centre in Castlemaine with the following documents.

All applications are forwarded to Avdata to create an account and water usage is billed monthly.

Have an Avdata account and electronic key and want to use our standpipes?

You need to complete and submit an application (with your existing key number), and present your water carters licence and drivers licence. The $34 payment for an electronic key will be wavered unless you require immediate access, in which case you also need to purchase an electronic key from us.

Please be aware that it may take up to 5 business days until your existing key is registered to be used on our standpipes.
