Council is pursuing a range of projects that aim to increase affordable housing in the shire.

These projects include:

Local Law 13 - Camping on Private Property

Council is currently considering a change to 'Local Law 13 - Camping on Private Property with a dwelling' as part of our efforts to increase affordable housing in the shire.

In late 2022 Councillors committed to community engagement before making a decision on the proposed change.

The community have been invited to share their thoughts on the law, so Council can:

  • Explore the level of community support for the proposed change
  • Better understand any direct or indirect impacts to residents and property owners across the shire.

Councillors will consider the outcomes of the community consultation at a future meeting of Council later in 2023.

Housing and Neighbourhood Study - Maldon and Newstead

Mount Alexander Shire’s population is growing and a strategic approach towards housing is needed. We need to make sure that any new housing meets the need of our current and future populations, has a diversity of options to match our demographics, and is being provided in the right locations.

We must also consider heritage values, neighbourhood character and environmental features (including the natural environment and biodiversity as well as environmental risks such as bushfire).

All of this and more will be considered as we develop a housing strategy for Maldon and Newstead.
