Alex Sanson is a sculptor with a focus on kinetic, mechanical and interactive art.
Recent permanent large scale sculpture commissions include kinetic and wind powered sculptures for central Benalla and on the Wimmera river-front in Horsham, both about 6m high and a major mechanical kinetic sculpture (in collaboration with First Nations artist Leanne Tobin) at Blacktown hospital, Sydney.
Alex also designs and builds architectural metal work, pergolas and gates, provides services to other artists including mechanical technical and CAD design, some machining, fabrication and repair work, and the occasional school or community public art workshop.
Alex’s works primarily with steel (including stainless steel), for its strength and versatility, and because it lends itself to so many different techniques and applications. Alex also uses other metals, timber, plastics, stone and electrical and mechanical components where appropriate. Techniques used include fabrication and machining, welding, woodworking and a little blacksmithing. After initial sketching and concept development, CAD is used extensively to help fully imagine and plan complex moving 3D structures and how they will relate to their intended site.
He also makes sculpture for galleries and homes as well as large-scale kinetic sculpture for arts and music festivals around the country including White Night in Melbourne, WOMAD, Real Festival in Sydney, Spilt Milk in Canberra, Rainbow Serpent, The Outback Eclipse Festival in the South Australia desert, Upstream in Wodonga and many others.
