Signs are a great way to promote your business and direct people to your activities and events. Some of these signs require the right approvals and permits.

See below for more information.

Footpath trading signs

If you are a business and you want to advertise on the footpath with an A-frame or directional sandwich board you will need a permit.

Typical uses for these signs are cafe's, real estate agents and retailers.

To apply or for further information including fees and applying for a permit visit the A-frame signboards page.

Building signs

If you are looking to install or alter a sign on your business site that is a private building, you may require a planning or building permit. This will depend on the location of your business and the size/type of sign.

We recommend chatting to one of our Planning Services team:

  • In person - Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 8:30 am – 5:00pm at the Civic Centre, Corner Lyttleton Street and Lloyd Street, Castlemaine.
  • Phone - Monday to Friday from 8:30 am – 5:00pm on 03 5471 1700
  • Email - send an email to planning@mountalexander.vic.gov.au.

Home based business signs

If you run a home based business you can erect one non-illuminated home occupation sign up to 0.2 square metres without planning approval.

Keep in mind that you may still need a planning permit to display a sign at your home in some circumstances (such as impacted by a heritage overlay).

To qualify for one of these signs, the core business must be tourism-based with a strong commitment to servicing visitors.

The following list helps to classify a site as either a tourist or services facility:

If your sign is approved by VicRoads, applicants are responsible for all costs related to the design, manufacture, installation and maintenance of the sign.
