Connecting our community
Social cohesion plays a key role in resilience to climate change impacts, because people are better able to care for each other in a connected community with a strong sense of belonging.
Together, we can prepare for, and recover from, the impacts of climate change.
Our Community Wellbeing team manage a Vulnerable Persons Register on behalf of the Department of Family, Fairness and Housing. This team actively seeks opportunities to improve thermal comfort of client homes. They communicate with clients in advance of predicted heatwave events, encouraging them to prepare themselves and their homes.
We acknowledge the important role our future generations play in addressing the climate crisis. Council’s Middle Years Plan encourages kids to connect with the environment and engage with nature play. An annual ‘Youth Leadership in the Environment’ award is given via Council’s Youth Awards.
The Community Partnerships team works with members of our Indigenous community, with a strong focus on encouraging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members and other community members to work together to care for Country.
This includes the sharing and learning of cultural knowledge relating to Djaara Country.
Council provides annual funding to Nalderun Education Aboriginal Corporation, supporting the Meeting Place indigenous education program and the First Nations Youth Leadership Program.
The Community Partnerships team also supports the Maldon Neighbourhood Centre and Castlemaine Community House, both of which run programs focusing on environmental issues.
We are working to address the risks of climate change to public health through the delivery of our Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plan(PDF, 2MB).
