Mount Alexander Shire Council has begun works along Walker Street in Castlemaine to improve pedestrian and road safety, accessibility and the footpath network.
Walker Street is a popular route for local residents and visitors that connects the Castlemaine Botanical Gardens and The Mill.
Upgrading the footpath, and adding in crossing points and street lighting, will significantly improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians. It will also link existing footpath networks and encourage more residents to walk across town.
The project will include the following works:
• A 1.5m sealed asphalt footpath along Walker Street that connects the railway crossing with the existing path at the Barkers Creek bridge.
• Two pedestrian crossing points, including kerb outstands that will reduce crossing distance, and improve safety and visibility.
• The installation of street lighting.
Works are due to be completed in July 2023.
As part of the process, there may be minor delays in traffic movements.
