Congratulations to our 2024 Youth Award winners

The 2024 Mount Alexander Youth Awards Festival saw six incredible young people take home well-deserved awards on Friday 29 November.

The festival was held at Victory Park in Castlemaine where people of all ages gathered to celebrate the contributions that young people make to our community.

The awards recognise leadership across four separate categories.

Mount Alexander Shire Council’s Mayor, Rosie Annear, said that the Youth Award winners are an incredible collection of future leaders.

"Congratulations to all our incredible youth award winners!” said Mayor Annear.

“Your hard work, passion, and creativity inspire not just your peers but all of us in the community.

“We are proud to celebrate your achievements with you, and also celebrate the futures that you are making for yourselves.

“Keep on being your wonderful unique selves, and know that your community is cheering you on every step of the way,” said Mayor Annear.

Along with the awards presentation, the festival included a line-up of local music by Tongue and Cheek; a dance performance by Movement Zone; and yummy treats and fun activities.

About the winners

Tanisha Murray – Youth Award for Social Impact

Tanisha is an inspirational First Nations youth leader, mentor and advocate who leads with kindness and warmth. Through her work with Nalderun and Council, she continuously supports and empowers others with her strength, creativity and leadership, leaving a lasting impact on those she supports. 

Harper Russell-Just - Youth Award for Social Impact

Harper is a dedicated volunteer across multiple organisations, including the SES, CFA, Council, and the Create Foundation, where they contribute their time and skills to community events and services. From providing technical support for local events to advocating for children in care, Harper’s commitment to making a positive impact in the community is truly inspiring.

Lloyd Meadows - Youth Award in Industry

Lloyd, the founder of Tortoise Espresso, has built a thriving café that not only serves exceptional coffee and showcases his renowned latte art but also fosters a sense of community and environmental consciousness. Through his innovative ventures, including a film lab and collaborations with other local businesses, Lloyd has become a true leader in Castlemaine, setting a powerful example of sustainability, creativity, and dedication to supporting others.

Callum Neilson-Bridgfoot - Youth Award in Music and the Arts

Callum's nine-year journey at Movement Zone Studio showcases his remarkable growth from a passionate dancer to a respected teacher and leader within the dance community. His active role in promoting dance, supporting his peers, and inspiring the next generation reflect his commitment to both the art form and the people around him.

Thea Sydes - Youth Award in Music and the Arts

Thea is an exceptionally dedicated and versatile artist, balancing their passion for dance, theatre, visual arts, and film, with over 15 hours each week devoted to rehearsals, volunteering, and creative work. From performing in local theatre productions and directing a school play to creating artwork exhibited regionally and managing the Young Makers Market, Thea continuously demonstrates remarkable talent, leadership, and commitment to the arts.

Grace Coff - Youth Award for the Environment

Grace is a strong Yorta-Yorta woman who is a passionate advocate for sustainability and environmental care, working tirelessly to promote First Nations ways of caring for Country. Through her leadership at Nalderun, Harcourt Bushtucker Farm, and Me-Mandook Galk, Grace fosters connection, respect, and a sustainable future for both her community and the broader public.

 

The popular Youth Awards Festival was organised by members of Council’s Youth Advisory Group and FReeZA Committee (Eight Metre Speaker), with help from Council.

The Youth Awards Festival was funded by the Victorian Government’s Engage and Freeza grants.
