Council calls on community to take over Mechanics Lane
Published on 27 July 2023
Mount Alexander Shire Council is calling for expressions of interest for local musicians, performers, food vendors and market stall holders to set up at Mechanics Lane.
Mechanics Lane is located in the heart of Castlemaine, on the corner of Frederick Street and opposite the Castlemaine Library.
From November 2023 to April 2024, local creatives are invited to invigorate the outdoor space with music, art, food, activities and more, showcasing their talent and connecting with the wider community.
Applications of all shapes and sizes are welcome, and suggestions include:
Workshops: dance, movement, circus
Share your expertise and passion for dance, movement or circus by hosting an interactive working for people of all ages and skill levels.
Musicians and DJs
Get the community up and dancing with live musical performances. Whether you’re a soloist, duet, ensemble, large band or DJ – any musical performance is welcome!
Open-air cinema
Organise a series of film nights and showcase local content, family-friendly movies, cult classics or blockbusters.
Markets
Host a vintage market or suitcase sale for all the treasure hunters in town.
Food Truck Fridays
Set up your food truck or stall to serve delicious food, beverages and sweets to the community.
Mount Alexander Shire Council’s Manager of Economy and Culture, Merryn Tinkler, said that the activation of Mechanics Lane is a fantastic way to bring the community together.
“The space will be open to local musicians, performers, community groups, food trucks and whoever else has an idea to bring the community together,” said Ms Tinkler.
“We have a vibrant and creative community here in Mount Alexander Shire, and this is program is the perfect way for locals to showcase their work.
“It’s also a great reason to spend time together and celebrate our unique shire.”
Expressions of interest for Mechanics Lane’s program are now open and close on Wednesday 30 August.
