Council presents Purpose: a film, conversation and community event
Published on 28 November 2024
Mount Alexander Shire Council is proud to present a special screening of the documentary film Purpose, scheduled to take place at the Theatre Royal in Castlemaine on Friday 6 December at 12.30pm.
This free afternoon event invites the community to explore how economies can better serve people, the environment, and our collective future. A panel discussion with global and local experts will follow the film, offering people a chance to engage in this important conversation.
Purpose is a ground-breaking documentary film that follows political economists Katherine Trebeck and Lorenzo Fioramonti as they reimagine economic success beyond GDP. Instead, they focus on systems that prioritise human and environmental wellbeing. Purpose also examines the Wellbeing Economy Governments (WEGo) project and Italy’s efforts to implement these ideas in public policy.
Dr Katherine Trebeck, a globally recognised advocate for the wellbeing economy, will introduce the film and participate in a Q&A session.
Joining her will be Warwick Smith, Program Director of the Wellbeing Economy at the Centre for Policy Development and co-founder of the Castlemaine Institute, and Merryn Tinkler, the Council’s Manager of Economy and Culture.
Together, they will explore how the film’s global themes relate to the unique challenges and opportunities in Mount Alexander Shire.
This event ties directly to Mount Alexander Shire Council’s Economic Development Strategy, which prioritises the wellbeing of people and the environment. The screening and discussion provide an opportunity to consider how these principles can shape a more purposeful economy in our community.
For Merryn Tinkler, the conversation is deeply relevant to the Mount Alexander Shire.
“Our community has been actively reflecting on what prosperity means for our region as we developed our Economic Development Strategy,” said Ms Tinkler.
“It’s about finding ways to support each other while caring for the unique environment and heritage that define our shire.
“Events like this bring those ideas to life, helping us move from discussions to meaningful action,” she said.
