Mount Alexander Shire Council is calling on community members to get involved in 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

The international initiative was established by the United Nations to raise awareness and encourage communities to take action to end gender-based violence.

16 Days of Activism runs from 25 November, which is International day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, to 10 December, which is International Human Rights Day.

The regional theme for 2024 is ‘We can change the story Loddon Mallee. Choose respect.’

Mount Alexander Shire Council’s Director Healthy Communities, Lisa Knight, said that Council is proud to support 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

“Every year our community comes together to engage with activities, events and resources,” said Ms Knight.

“There’ll be a vigil and a nightly art installation at the Northern Arts Hotel in Castlemaine.

“You can join an online discussion about men’s roles in promoting respect and equality.

“You can wear an orange flower to show your support for the campaign, and if you’re crafty, crochet your own.

“The purpose is to support one another, make sure resources and support are available, and make it known that Council does not tolerate gender-based violence in our community,” said Ms Knight.

Join the 16 Days of Activism campaign in one of the following ways:

  • Get involved in the Crochet Flower Project by crafting orange flowers to wear and share.
  • Join the community vigil at the Northern Arts Hotel on Monday 25 November at 4.30pm.
