A toy library, an online plant library and tools for a tradie trailer are some of the local projects funded through the latest round of Mount Alexander Shire Council’s Community Grants program.

Council has awarded grants to 16 community groups who will share in almost $50,000 to deliver projects that foster connection and community across the shire.

One of the community projects that this round of funding will support is the Castlemaine and Surrounds Women’s Shed. They’ll be equipping their mobile tools library with batteries, a charging station, storage containers and other tools.

Another group to receive funding is the Maldon Toy Library, a group that loan out new and used toys to families with children aged up to five years.

Some of the other projects and initiatives include a program to encourage kids to love and learn about nature; a defibrillator for the Wesley Hill Hall; and an updated brochure for the Castlemaine Historical Society: A Drive Through Historic Castlemaine.

Johanna Winchcomb, President of the Castlemaine Women’s Shed, said that the group is excited about the success of their grant application.

“We are working towards equipping our tradie trailer to enable us to run on-site workshops,” said Johanna.

“The grant will go a long way towards helping us achieve our goal.”

“Thank you Mount Alexander Shire Council.”

Mount Alexander Shire Council’s Mayor, Cr Rosie Annear said that Community Grants are an exciting and tangible way for Council to support community groups.

“Community groups and clubs are the heart of our shire, and we want them to feel supported in all the positive work that they do,” said Mayor Annear.

“Our shire is very community-centred and we love to see so many different groups working to connect residents.

“Congratulations to all our grant recipients. I’m excited to see these amazing projects come to life.”

Council offers two rounds of Community Grants every year. The next round of grants opens on Monday 22 January 2024.
