Join us to celebrate International Day of People with Disability
Published on 27 November 2023
Mount Alexander Shire Council is inviting the community to join a free, family-friendly event to celebrate International Day of People with Disability (IDPWD).
IDPWD is an annual day that aims to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability. It’s also a day to celebrate diversity, and think about how we can make our shire a welcoming and inclusive place for people of all abilities.
Council is proud to support the event, which will include a live broadcast from MainFM’s Able Radio, a silent disco by D-Tour, the opportunity to meet people from disability support organisation Windarring, and a barbecue put on by the Castlemaine Lions Club.
Mount Alexander Shire Council’s Deputy Mayor, Cr Rosie Annear, said that Council is proud to be supporting the IDPWD event.
“I’m really looking forward to this event and celebrating those who live with a disability in our community.
“It’s going to be fantastic to launch our Disability Inclusion Action Plan, which we’ve worked so hard on in partnership with our community and Council staff.
“Come along to spend time with our community, and celebrate with music, dancing and a barbecue. Everyone is welcome and we hope to see you there.”
When: Friday 1 December, 12.30pm to 2.30pm
Where: Victory Park, Castlemaine
Cost: Free! BBQ included
On the day, Council will also be launching the Disability Inclusion Action Plan 2023-2027, which was adopted by Councillors at the September meeting of Council.
The plan will guide Council and the community in working together to ensure that Mount Alexander Shire is a welcoming and inclusive place for people of all abilities.
Deputy Mayor Annear, who was part of the Disability Inclusion Action Plan working group, said she was thrilled to see the plan adopted by Councillors.
“This plan is a work of collaboration, and highlights our genuine intention to make our shire a place where everyone feels safe and like they belong”, said Deputy Mayor Annear.
“I learnt a lot about the impacts of both visible and invisible disabilities, and the barriers that exist – in our shire and beyond – which are preventing many people having the same opportunities as those who live without a disability.”
“Thank you to all the members of our working group, for being so generous with their time, energy and passion, and for sharing themselves and their stories so willingly.
