Sheep grazing

Mount Alexander Shire Council is inviting local landowners to sign up for a Holistic Grazing Management short course.

The course will assist landowners in improving their skills and knowledge about grazing livestock. It will also include discussions and six visits to various farms, a visit to each participant’s property to develop a plan, and online tutorials.

The course is $150 per farming property and applications close on Sunday 26 July.

The short course is part of the Healthy Landscapes program, which also includes a series of free events held over six months that focus on regenerative agricultural practices.

This includes grazing, productivity, soil health, biodiversity and waterway health.

Mount Alexander Shire Council’s Mayor, Councillor Matthew Driscoll, said that Council is proud to be able to support local agriculture with such an extensive program of workshops.

“This is an incredible opportunity to get some practical knowledge about land management practices.

“There’ll be lots of workshops, webinars and field days where you can learn about waterways, soil health, grazing and lots of other things.

“One of the events we have coming up this month is a field day at a sheep farm in Sutton Grange.

“You’ll learn about the rotational grazing system used here while the owners work full time jobs.

“There’s also a paddock to plate webinar, a class on ecological vegetation, a discussion group on multi-species cropping and a workshop on hands-on fencing.

“This program is also a great opportunity to network, mingle, and swap stories and tips.

“Have a look at what’s on offer. You can sign up for the entire program or just choose the ones that are relevant to you.”
