Let’s celebrate our outstanding residents at the Australia Day Awards

Do you know an amazing Australian who goes above and beyond to support their community? Nominate them for a 2024 Australia Day Award.

Australia Day Awards acknowledge and celebrate individuals who have made a difference to the people around them by contributing their time and skills towards their community.

Mount Alexander Shire Council’s Mayor, Cr Rosie Annear, said that the Australia Day Awards are an important part of the Australia Day – Survival Day community event.

“The awards are a fantastic way for us to acknowledge some of the generous and hardworking people in our community,” said Mayor Annear.

“Every year I’m a bit in awe of the award recipients and amazed by the things they do to support our community.

“The Australia Day – Survival Day community event is a great opportunity to celebrate these special people in our community.

“It’s wonderful to present these awards among other celebrations: the citizenship ceremony, the Survival Day concert, and a beautiful, inclusive atmosphere with dancing, connection and yummy treats.

“I encourage everyone to have a think about the people in their lives that make our community a better place and nominate them for an Australia Day Award.”

Australia Day Awards categories are:

  • Citizen of the Year
  • Senior Citizen of the Year – nominee must be over 65 years of age on 26 January 2023
  • Young Citizen of the Year – nominee must be under 26 years of age on 26 January 2023
  • Event of the Year – this includes online events

Eligible nominees must:

  • live in Mount Alexander Shire
  • be an Australian citizen
  • have given outstanding service to the local community over a number of years.

Nominators are asked to:

  • outline the nominee’s contribution to the community
  • list the nominee’s other significant contributions and/or achievements
  • explain ways the nominee has demonstrated excellence in the community
  • add other relevant background details
  • provide details of another person who can be contacted about the nominee.

Mount Alexander Shire Council’s 2023 Citizen of the Year, George Milford, said that it was gratifying to learn of the award and the kind remarks of appreciation that followed.  

“I have been a volunteer member of several groups and have learned much by working alongside many wonderful citizens,” said Mr Milford.

“The annual awards provide an opportunity for locals to show their thankfulness for people who devote unstinting time and effort to improve the life of the community.”

To nominate someone for an Australia Day Award, complete the nomination form at www.mountalexander.vic.gov.au/AustraliaDayAwards2024, or pick up a hard copy form from the Castlemaine Civic Centre.

Nominations close at 5.00pm on Friday 1 December.

Award winners will be announced on Friday 26 January 2024 at the Australia Day – Survival Day community event.
