It’s an honour to accept the role of Mayor of Mount Alexander Shire Council and I look forward to carrying out this role with integrity and enthusiasm.

I’ve been a Councillor since October 2020 and in that time I’ve come to learn the ins and outs of Council, putting me in a much better position to advocate for my community – the very reason I became a Councillor in the first place.

I came from tough circumstances as a kid. My start in life was violent and confusing – we were often homeless and usually poor. I have been very fortunate to break out of a violent poverty cycle, and because of my childhood, I believe people shouldn’t be judged on where they’ve been. It’s about who you are in life.

Because of my background, I’m very passionate about easing the housing crisis in our community. This is something I’ll be working hard to progress during my time as Mayor.

Another area I’m passionate about is the growth and development of local businesses. This is another reason that I initially ran for Council. We have some of the best businesses in the world right here in our shire, and I’m interested in supporting them to flourish.

Being elected Mayor is not about me – it’s about me helping our community. Above all, I see my role as one that advocates for residents who feel that their voice is not being heard. I want us to work together towards further strengthening community ties where we can all be kinder to each other.

Finally, there are so many people I’d like to thank for supporting me on my journey.

In particular, I’d like to thank Cr Rosie Annear, who filled the role so well over the past twelve months. In my role as Deputy Mayor, I think we worked really well together and I look forward to continuing our duo in our new, reversed roles.

I’d also like to thank all the Council staff who, under the leadership of Darren Fuzzard, work incredibly hard to provide tons of support to the Councillors. You all assist us in navigating the often-tricky waters of local government legislation and protocol, and I’m very grateful for your support.

Thank you to my amazing family, who know how to support me, encourage me and guide me. And who know how to bring me down a peg or two when I need it.

Last, but not least, I’d like to thank the Mount Alexander Shire community. It’s your local knowledge, passion for a strong community and love of our unique shire that make this role a joy and an honour to be in.
