Mount Alexander Shire Council is inviting the community to visit the new mural at Norwood Hill Recreation Reserve, created by Djaara artist Daikota Nelson.

The mural aims to make the space welcoming for all park visitors, including young people, children, families, local residents and First Nations communities.

It is the final step in revitalising the parkland in South Castlemaine, following Council’s development of a multi-purpose youth zone with parkour challenges, a rebound wall, netball/basketball hoops and expansion of the reserve’s parklands.

The mural has been painted on the activity wall on the ball courts, which forms part of the youth zone in the park.

Daikota is a proud Djaara woman living and working on ancestral lands on Dja Dja Wurrung Country. She has been painting since 2016, it has always been a part of her family and community.

Her work explores her connection to Country and what it means to be a contemporary First Nations woman living with continuing connection to culture.

“The artwork concept for this project is inspired by colours of Country, colours from the landscape and the recreational space,” said Daikota.

“It is about coming together in the community to play, drawing inspiration from the Djaara word ‘Wirima' which means ‘to play’.

“The centre design reflects gaining knowledge as we grow. The gum leaves depict age and wisdom, representing the parents, guardians and older community members that bring family here; and a place of sharing and harmony, and coming together.”

Mount Alexander Shire Council’ Mayor, Cr Matthew Driscoll, said the mural is the perfect completion for the Norwood Hill Recreation Reserve development.

“It creates a warm welcome and tells an important story that connects us with Djaara culture.

“Council is committed to investing in more public art in this highly creative community.

“We’re so pleased to see this mural creating a vibrant atmosphere for all residents using the new recreation facilities in this reserve.”

This project is proudly supported by Tennis Australia.
