Ahead of the local government elections on Saturday 26 October, Mount Alexander Shire Council is excited to announce a unique opportunity for potential Councillor candidates to gain firsthand insight into the responsibilities, opportunities and challenges of serving as a Councillor.

Council is offering one-on-one information sessions between potential candidates and Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Darren Fuzzard, and/or Mayor Matthew Driscoll, and/or Deputy Mayor Rosie Annear.

The sessions will be an informal opportunity for potential candidates to ask questions of the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and/or CEO about the role, Mount Alexander Shire Council and local government.

“Being a Councillor is a big commitment, and one that offers many incredible rewards,” said Mayor Driscoll.

“Before people put their hand up and stand for Council, it’s important that they have a thorough understanding of what the role involves, how decisions get made and what the operating environment is for Local Government.

“Rosie, Darren and myself are committed to ensuring that potential candidates for the upcoming election go into it with as much practical knowledge as possible about what to expect.

“There’s a lot of value in firsthand experience in understanding the role of a Councillor and we’d love to share it”, said Mayor Driscoll.

Highlights of the one-on-one information sessions include:

Insightful conversations – Potential Councillor candidates will have the opportunity to engage in candid and informative discussions with the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and/or CEO to gain valuable insights into the day-to-day operations of local government and the responsibilities of a Councillor.

Understanding the role – These one-on-one meetings aim to provide potential candidates with a deeper understanding of the challenges, opportunities, and decision-making processes involved in serving as a Councillor.

“Councillors, and in turn Councils, have a significant impact on the lives of residents,” said Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Darren Fuzzard.

“Their decisions influence economic, social and cultural experiences for residents and visitors on a daily basis and our staff provide more than 100 services and programs to our community.

“Through these sessions, we hope to help potential candidates for the next Council election to be as well informed as possible when making their decision about getting involved.

“This is a unique opportunity to gain firsthand experience and insight into the role of a Councillor from both a Councillor and Administration perspective.” said Mr Fuzzard.
