Works begin on Guildford Big Tree
Published on 11 February 2025
Mount Alexander Shire Council will be undertaking works to improve the health of the Guildford Big Tree, following storm damage in 2024.
The majestic River Red Gum is estimated to be between 500 and 1,000 years old, and has been awarded the title of Victorian Tree of the Year by the National Trust of Australia (Victoria).
The tree was damaged during a severe storm in February 2024 and shed a very large limb.
The following works will take place to improve the health of the tree, as well as reduce risks to both the tree and the public:
- Weight reduction
- Formative pruning
- Mulching with Indigenous understory plantings
- Replacement of the surrounding fence
Works will commence in February and be completed in March. Please keep clear of the area during this time.
Given the tree’s cultural significance and listing on the Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Register, Council officers have consulted with local Djaara elders on the above listed works. The large, fallen limb will be used by DJAARA (Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation) for exciting future cultural activities.
