Mount Alexander Shire Council has begun its annual autumn leaf collection program, with a focus on areas around Castlemaine, Maldon, Campbells Creek, Chewton, Harcourt, Newstead and Guildford.

Leaf collection is important at this time of year in order to maintain safe walkways for pedestrians and to prevent drain blockages and localised flooding.

“The deciduous trees look beautiful at this time of year but once the leaves start falling they can quickly block drains and become quite slippery and hazardous for pedestrians,” said Brett Quarrier, Works Coordinator, Mount Alexander Shire Council.

“We have two teams working daily to clear footpaths and drains using a truck-mounted leaf sucker, hand held blowers and a street sweeper,” said Mr Quarrier.

The leaf collection program runs weekdays for six to eight weeks during autumn. Leaf collection is planned to finish at the end of June.

In support of this this program, residents are reminded that they are responsible for maintaining nature strips and keeping their crossover, the drain under their driveway, clear of leaves.
