This brochure was developed in partnership with Maldon Neighbourhood Centre and Castlemaine Community House as part of the Age Friendly Communities Project.

V/Line Rail

The train line between Melbourne and Bendigo passes through the Mount Alexander Shire with all services stopping at the Castlemaine Station.

If you’re a Victorian senior, you may be eligible for a free myki card and 50 per cent discount on travel.

V/Line Buses

The following V/Line bus services operate in the Shire:
- Ballarat – Bendigo (via Baringhup, Maldon, Newstead, Castlemaine, Harcourt)
- Daylesford - Melbourne (via Castlemaine)
- Kyneton – Bendigo (via Taradale, Elphinstone, Chewton, Castlemaine, Harcourt)
- Maryborough – Melbourne (via Castlemaine, Guildford, Strangways, Newstead)
- Mildura – Ballarat (via Harcourt, Castlemaine, Guildford, Maldon, Welshmans Reef, Newstead)

The following local bus services operate in the Shire:
- Castlemaine - Campbells Creek (Route 1)
- Castlemaine Town Loop (Route 2)
- Castlemaine - Harcourt (Route 3)
- Castlemaine - Maldon (Route 4)
- Castlemaine - Taradale via Chewton (Route 5)
- Castlemaine - Chewton via Loddon Prison (Route 6) – weekends only
- Kyneton - Taradale - Castlemaine – Bendigo
- Ballarat - Bendigo via Maryborough and Castlemaine

Taxis

Castlemaine Taxis

Castlemaine Taxis provide taxi services throughout the Shire. They provide a Sunday Bus service between Maldon and Castlemaine, which is free if you have a valid V/Line ticket, or otherwise charged at bus fare prices.provide taxi services on demand throughout the Shire.

The Multi-purpose Taxi Program (MPTP)

The Multi-Purpose Taxi Program (MPTP) makes transport more accessible and affordable for people with a severe disability and who meet eligibility criteria.

Community Buses

Newstead and District Community Bus

The Newstead Rural Transaction Centre (RTC) runs a community transport service for residents of Newstead, Guildford, Welshman’s Reef, Strangways and Yapeen for transport to Castlemaine and Maryborough. All trips must be booked in advance by calling the RTC. The bus is also available for charter.

Baringhup and Maldon Community Bus

Managed by the Maldon Neighbourhood Centre, the 12 seater (11 + driver) bus is available for charter with affordable rates for community organisations.

Community Wellbeing Bus

Council’s new Community Wellbeing Bus, named ‘Peggy’, will provide a way for people who don’t have access to transport to travel to an aquatic, wellness and exercise facilities within the local area. The bus is the first wheelchair accessible bus for the Mount Alexander Shire Council.

As part of the initial pilot program, Peggy will pick up people from their residence in the local area and take them to the Gurri Wanyarra Wellbeing Centre in Kangaroo Flat, which will provide participants access to the centre’s facilities to engage in physical activity. Discounts are available as part of the pilot program.

The bus operates twice a week and days/times depend on booking numbers. For bookings and information, download the Community Wellbeing Bus brochure or call the Community Wellbeing Bus Project Coordinator on 5471 1797.

Patient Transport

Castlemaine Health provide free transport to and from medical appointments that are outside the Mount Alexander Shire, with referral from your local GP. Speak to your GP for more information.

Maldon Hospital is able to provide disability accessible transport for those who make a Dr’s appointment at the Maldon Medical Clinic on the First or Third Tuesday of each month. Historic Rail
