Froomes Road bridge strengthening

We have plans to improve the existing single-lane bridge on Froomes Road in Castlemaine.

Project summary

Council has previously flagged Froomes Road bridge for replacement.

Following extensive community consultation and further engineering and traffic assessments, Council at its December 2022 meeting moved a motion to strengthen the existing bridge, and install traffic calming measures along Froomes Road.

Council is undertaking basic maintenance works to the bridge to prevent further deterioration of the structure.

  • Replacement of the existing pavement on bridge deck and approaches
  • Repairs to bridge barrier railing and approach guard railing
  • Repairs and maintenance to the existing support beams
  • Repairs to the existing central concrete pier
  • Rock beaching/Scour protection to the existing abutment block works
  • Vegetation trimming and removal of growth within the abutments of the bridge

Where we are now

A contractor has been selected to undertake the basic maintenance works on the structure. These works are being undertaken in three phases.

Phase one – completed June 2024

The first phase involves some vegetation trimming around the guard railing, repairs to the concrete piers, barrier rail and deck.

Phase two – underway June 2024

The second phase involves beaching works to improve scour protection around the abutments, vegetation removal in and around the abutments and basic repairs to the bridge abutments.

Phase three – estimated to begin July 2024

The third phase will require the removal of existing pavement on the deck and approaches to the road. A new asphalt pavement will then be constructed.

Note: Due to weather conditions impacting the water levels in the creek and accessibility to conduct the works in phase two, there may be delays between these works being undertaken.

What happens next

The works undertaken will allow the existing 15 tonne load limit to be retained on the Froomes Road bridge.
